(Times Of Israel) A statue of prominent Jewish woman — Licoricia of Winchester — who lived during the 13th century and died just 20 years before Jews were expelled en masse from England for usury and ritual murder — was unveiled in the city last week:
The bronze, life-size statue depicts Licoricia, who ran a successful business and raised four children in Winchester until her murder in 1277. She is depicted with her youngest son, Asser, who is seen holding a dreidel. Licoricia “has real resonance for today,” acclaimed historian and best-selling author Simon Sebag Montefiore told The Jewish Chronicle.
“She was a woman in a man’s world, an ethnic minority at a time of great racism and prejudice and persecution. She was a very successful person,” he added. “She must have been a great character. She was also an outsider in a time ruled by aristocrats and kings so on so many levels she’s got real resonance especially since there’s a tendency now to deny antisemitism, to deny there was racism against Jewish people and the fact of the matter is she proves that.”
A moneylender, Licoricia had a roster of clients that included King Henry III and Queen Eleanor. Living in times of virulent antisemitism — her death preceded the 1290 total expulsion of Jews from England by only 13 years — she was jailed repeatedly before being murdered in a mysterious attack in Winchester. She was also widowed twice.
…But despite the unexpected change in plans, the unveiling event continued as planned, drawing an excited crowd and Christian, Muslim, Sikh and Buddhist community leaders, who came to show their support. Addressing the audience, Chief Rabbi of the UK Ephraim Mirvis spoke about the difficult conditions Licoricia must have experienced during her lifetime. He noted the “sustained horrific persecution of Jews in this country leading ultimately to the expulsion of the Jews from England in 1290.”
And yet, “within those exceptionally trying times there was an extraordinary lady committed to her faith who was determined to raise her family, built a successful enterprise and give a contribution of inestimable value to her country,” he said.
The biblical quote “Love thy neighbour as thyself” from the Book of Leviticus is engraved on one side of the statue, both in Hebrew and English….“The broader message is that we all benefit from letting women take an equal part in our society. It also holds up the fact that as she was Jewish she was persecuted in those times,” Rank-Broadley told JC.
Jews are often comically tone deaf — unveiling a statue to a usurer who was murdered mostly likely for her sharp business practices — next they’ll unveil a statue of a “martyred” rabbi who was “falsely” accused of ritual murder of a Christian child.
By the late 13th century, Jews had gained a notorious reputation for practicing ruinous usury — so much so that King Edward Longshanks ultimately decided to rid England of all Jews in order to save the nation.
Jews like to tell themselves that they practiced usury only because Christians weren’t allowed to practice moneylending at interest — so they had no “choice” — somebody “had” to do it.
Jews, however, weren’t forbidden from being tanners, tailors, blacksmiths or farmers, but for some reason they gravitated to the far more lucrative — and less labor intensive — usury.
When the inevitable violent reactions to these Jewish moneylenders occurred — after ruining many of the landed aristocracy — the Jews claimed to be “persecuted” — they never acknowledge how their participation in this unpopular profession made them targets.
Ironically, this statue of the usurer bears the inscription, “Love thy neighbour” — as if that applied to alien Jewish moneylenders who were robbing you blind — and completely ignoring the plethora of Bible verses prohibiting usury, such as Ezekiel 18:13
Lends at interest, and takes profit; shall he then live? He shall not live. He has done all these abominations; he shall surely die; his blood shall be upon himself.
God shall not be mocked — and in her violent death, this Jewish usurer fulfilled these prophetic words — words that today’s so-called “Jews” completely ignore — or explain away.
And the hypocrisy of the Jews in the U.K. once again rears its ugly head — as they worship mammon and extol this usurer for her “success” — yet at the same time scream bloody murder because England’s greatest writer — William Shakespeare — dared write “Merchant Of Venice” — a play about a Jewish moneylender, who was given the opportunity to redeem himself and change his ways — before he ended up like Licoricia of Winchester.
